Are Optris thermal cameras any good?
Our assessment is based on published specifications, not hands-on testing or user reviews. Optris, a German manufacturer based in Berlin, makes fixed cameras for process monitoring, automation and research, not handheld inspection cameras. Judged on that ground, the four documented models have clear strengths and clear limits.
- Strengths: high frame rates for fast events (80 Hz on the PI 400i LT, and a 125 Hz sub-frame mode on the PI 640), interchangeable lenses, free PIX Connect software with SDKs, USB or Ethernet integration, IP67 housings on several models and ranges up to 1,500 °C with the optional calibration.
- Limits: no screen or battery, so a computer or network is required; published NETD of 60 to 80 mK, higher than the 40 mK claimed by many handheld cameras (measurement conditions differ); prices in the top band, with the PI 400i LT listed from €3,950 by Optris.
- Who it suits: production lines, laboratories, R&D and permanent monitoring. For building, electrical or maintenance inspections, a handheld camera is a better fit: use the selector.
